Jerome J. Cushman taught, choreographed, directed, and led workshops for more years than he will admit. Since 1974 he has worked at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the performing arts and the Department of Cultural and Creative Studies.

For the past 18 years Cushman’s interest has taken him into the world of haiku as a writer, theoretician and performer. In 2000 he originated and co-ordinated the R.F. Panara Haiku Contest for NTID students and deaf college students at the Tsukuba College of Technology in Japan. Because of the success of this contest he has visited Japan 5 times to study and share in the Japanese haiku experience. In 2004 he helped to reestablish the Rochester Area Haiku Group which has monthly meetings and readings. He is also an active member of the Haiku Society of America (HNA) . His works have been printed in a variety of books and magazines.

Dennis Maloney is a poet and translator. He has published several volumes of translations from Japanese, these include Dusk Lingers: Haiku of Issa; Tangled Hair: Poems of Yosano Akiko; and Between the Floating Mist: Poems of Ryokan. In addition he is the editor/publisher of White Pine Press, a non-profit of poetry, fiction, essays, and literature in translation.

The Buffalo Kendo Club has arranged an open house and demonstration to celebrate the Year of Japan! This open house was introduced in effort to educate and introduce the ancient art of Japanese fencing.

Kendo, or the way of the sword, is one of the oldest and most revered martial arts. Kendo is based on the fencing techniques and philosophy of the samurai, Japan’s feudal warriors. Prior experience in Kendo is not required to participate in this open house, but a positive attitude and the willingness to learn is! Many come to enjoy a hard aerobic work out with an exotic twist.

Bring a positive attitude, comfortable clothes, and mention “Year of Japan” when you call!
